New Kinect, New Problem

scalf's picture

So a few weeks ago my Kinect stopped working. Although the USB probe recognized it, and the green light on the camera head was on, the picture would not come up in quartz, synapse, or TUIO.

So, I called Microsoft and the exchanged it for a new one.

Low and behold, the new one does not work either! Same thing, green light on camera head turns on (but not the green light in the usb connection). I tried the same programs but nothing came up.

I tried restarting and reinstalling but between my 2 computers, both had the same problem.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Thanks a bunch

Re: New Kinect, New Problem

After comparing my two machines, they were both recently updated by apple, perhaps there was a slight fix. I will try with an os from scratch and see if that helps

Are you running other powered stuff on your usb bus? I've seen stuff kinda like what you're talking about, but it happens when the power supply burns out... it's weird that the cam light is turning on without your cable light coming on. Are you using the grey jumper cable? (I have connected it a million times without it, but I suspect it may do something to shield the unit from power spikes... not sure).

Have you tried testing it on a newer XBox, minus the AC adapter?

Re: New Kinect, New Problem

I am not running anything else on the usb outlets. And if I take off the ac converter and try directly with no external power, i get the same results.

after tonight I will have a few days off and will be able to test it from scratch.

Re: New Kinect, New Problem

So I scrubbed my hard rive and reinstalled snow leopard onto my auxiliary machine and there was no change. Still green led on camera, no led on usb to power connection. Comes up in USB Probe, but gives a "no connection in quartz" with same result between kinect patches. No difference between the camera plugged into power or not - same symptoms and results.

So, I am wondering if it is the power cable?

Has anyone else heard of a faulty power cable?

*Note, Microsoft did not replace the power cable when it was sent to warranty.

Any suggestions are very welcome, thanks

Re: New Kinect, New Problem

I have some situations where i have to use a certain USB slot on my Macbook pro (its actually the slot nearest to the power supply).

Long shot but thought it might be worth mentioning

Tried all USB Ports on two different computers and same thing. I am going to order a new power cable and see if that helps

Re: New Kinect, New Problem

Alright everyone. Very good news.

I just got my new power cable and all is well again!!!! (only cost like $10)

The LED turns on, and the image goes through.

Thanks for the support everyone!
