QC Template Compositions

When I moved the Developer folder from my boot drive to another drive it lost the path to the Template compositions that come up with the New Compoitions Menu Command… including the QuartzBuilder template.

After freeing up space and moving the developer folder back they came back. Was wondering where they are actually saved, as files? I checked QC app bundle and the various System and Library folders I know have QC files and did a Spotlight check on the names and on "template" and so on and just couldn't find them.

Also is it important for Developer folder to live on boot drive, for other reasons (have some vague recollection I read that)? How to reset paths to templates if I do move QC off boot drive.

On leopard, 10.5.8. Cheers.

Re: QC Template Compositions

Quartz Composer thinks they should be found in /Developer/Library/Quartz Composer/Templates. The Developer folder should be at the root level of your Startup Disk, although I am sure it would be possible to alter and amend that if you wanted to :-). I think it would either be on a plist or else within the Welcome composition itself - View Package Contents of Quartz Composer application to get to that.

& the correct place to look is at the top level of the composition within the Inspector.

The Welcome.qtz is a really impressive piece of work and no mistake :-).

You can ascribe bespoked file paths in the Inspector, save file and that should mean on QC's next boot, it would look for the files in the alternate location you'll have allocated.

Re: QC Template Compositions

Thanks cybero. Somehow I thought because I had moved the whole developer folder they must not be in there — wrong!

I must say it's very weird that Spotlight didn't — and still isn't finding these Template Compostions when I search for them by name, either searching filename or contents.

Perhaps spotlight needs to rebuild it's database but now the Developer Folder is back on boot drive it should have a record of the files if it didn't update the database when I first moved them off the boot drive. I don't like spotlight! Find_Any_File and EasyFind apps found them though. Must remember not to trust spotlight.

I wouldn't screw around with modding that, or moving the Developer folder... there is more than just the template page that assumes a /Developer location.

Re: QC Template Compositions

I can't find welcome.qtz and neither can EasyFind. Perhaps it's a SL comp?

I think the WWDC iPhone app multi-display download ripple comp (think it was pre-release SL) is the most impressive QC example I've seen from Apple, did the source .qtz(s) ever get posted I wonder?

Re: QC Template Compositions

Yeah it's back now, thanks. It's a pain that my boot drive is so full, just with apps. I needed the space for the latest OS update needed >3GB to decompress/install, it's free again now.

I've even got CS4 on another drive so when I double-click a file made in CS4 it launches CS3 'cause CS3 is on my boot drive (with exception of PS which boots CS4 version). I've done the Get Info> Open with…>Change All… thing a heap of times, just hoping in vain :/

hey gt, I just PM you an idea about a potential structure smooth plugin direction.

Re: QC Template Compositions

It's inside the QC application package

It's an excellent example of constructive practice in QC though; a very good study item I think.

Oh, the template? Yeah, actually, it's pretty cool, I was extremely impressed when I first saw it, and am still impressed. There's a bug or two in it though...

No, the source for the original wall was never posted.
