Best GPU for Kineme3d?

blackburst's picture

Embarking on a scarey/thrifty endeavour to build a hackintosh for k3d purposes and just wondering if anyone knows which gPU's perform the best for this kind of work? I'm familiar with which cards are recommended for hack stability/support but I want some real world advice from you guys with opengl performance. Thanks

Smokris and cwright, et. al. may have some more insight, but kineme3d works on the CPU, so I don't think it matters! :-) That has been a real plus for me because results are so consistent among different models of Mac. A great plugin!

Hey blackburst did you get anywhere on you hacky mission? Thinking of getting a lappy to do one myself.. Has anyone else had experience with qtz on a hackintosh?

I don't have personal experience, but apparently it does work (err, trustworthy 2nd hand info...sorry, I try to shy away from that!).

However (first hand info) I think there's some pretty good google-able sources on this. http://www.hackintosh.com/ is the go-to place, afaik . I gather it's essentially "get the closest to apple spec" as possible. I think there may be some users around here that have ventured into it, that could give more constructive first hand experience, but I think they'll probably say much along the same lines (?).

All my machines are Hackintosh, everything works wonderful, despite of the system updates (you will have to really care about that). On my main Hack I have an AMD 6870. With the patches from Netkas.org, I can use QE/CI and 3 outputs simultaneously. Very good performance in a similar system of a MacBook Pro but 7 times heavier.

Great! Thank you. What Processor did you choose? Was the installation process as simple as you hoped?

Re: Best GPU for Kineme3d?

I have a Core2Duo in the laptop and a 2600k in the ´portable´one. Installation is not so easy and sometime is a trial-error process depending on your hardware. Nevertheless, there is tons of forums about that topic out there. Myself started a blog to resume the whole process of creation, but I need to update: http://thomasvanta.wordpress.com thats a little bit offtopic, so maybe we can continue in osx86

Re: Best GPU for Kineme3d?

I made a couple of them, because i wanted to play with openCL. My HT with a geforce 480 is incredibly fast!

I ran some experiments on a latest model macPro with a Quadro 4000 vs my €1000,- HT with the 480. Not only was the HT faster, but also more stable ?!?

This is a nice startingpoint if you want to build a desktop:

Have you tried running finicky stuff like OpenCL (re:hackintosh)? I'm curious how that fares for you. (I've heard reports of this working). Does image input into an OpenCL kernel work for you, if so? (I hope this doesn't drift to far from topic, but the topic is at least partially in reference to hackintoshes.)

The system is actually running REALLY well but it was pretty arduous until now. The main thing I came across was that QC would not work properly under lion. When the first welcome screen for quartz comes up it's all blacked out and bloccky, i couldn't place renderers such as billboardss etc down on the workspace at all and some existing comps gave a nsimmuttable array error. this sucked because tonymac's "unibeast" makes hackintosh setup child's play, but I had to step back to 10.6.8. Now it works a charm. Please, if anyone has any experience with qc under lion on a hack let me know. OpenCL works, QE works, everything's sweet after a couple of kext removals that I researched at tonymac forums. I wouldn't even bother for a laptop to be honest, it's enough of a pain in the arse with dsdt files for my specific motherboard and "fully supported" gear. I ended up getting an AMD 6870 also and I'm pretty damn happy with it. Down the track I want to get an nvidia card running in it for adobe and touch designer purposes but it's still very hit and miss from what I can see. I'm not too heart-broken about not being on lion because it looks like early adopters for qc under lion aren't having the best time anyway. All in all, do it if you have money and no job, the amount of time spent making the thing i could have just worked and bought a real mac, lol.

System specs are: Gigabyte GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3 2600K AMD 6870 (3 outputs working) Vertex3 SSD (oh my god this thing is awesome, fullhd vj'ing is more or less impossible without) Firewire 800 card corsair h60 watercooling silverstone psu Silverstone matx sg04h case (recommended) few mods and fan controllers

Re: hacky

btw george i have no idea how to test that but i'd love to try if you can post a patch for testing
