#d models crash Kineme 3D

jersmi's picture

I can't get 3D models to load into Kineme 3D model loader without crashing QC. I'd like to load in dae's downloaded from the google sketch depository, but nothing i try will work. Also, I am exporting models afrom cinema 4D as dae and obj, noth crash QC. Using mesh renderer works with the dae's i'm trying.

meant 3D models in the title, of course. Wish I could edit that as well as my other typos....

Well, you can edit the title of your comments... (sorry, not helpful)

keep in mind that google sketchup is a modeling toy, and the sketchup repository is full of meshes modeled by enthousiasts anonymous amateurs. (no offense).

Why not try to load sketchup models in C4d or any other professional package, clean them and export from there.

Re: three d models crash Kineme 3D

i have been reexporting from C4D, sure. i know google sketchup is a bunch of crap, but i'm chasing an idea that takes pleasure in all that silly stuff. i have a good friend who's a c4d guy, maybe he can help. i'm a 3d hack for sure (i don't really care that much about it). but i can't get anything to export that doesn't crash K3D right now. i'm building stuff in C4D, i'm opening sketchup dae's and reexporting, using only dae and obj. i've done a fair amount of stuff with simple 3d models using K3D with no problems, but it's been a while and i don't know why i am having such consistent problems now. built-in QC mesh tools are working, though many of the mesh fx (noise, bend, etc) are giving me black screen right now, too. v002 model loader works fine as well. i'll chip away, but any tips are helpful. is there anything i could look out for that would cause crashes?

Re: three d models crash Kineme 3D

crash should NOT happen in any case, proper error handling should just output a void mesh, but that's another story.

Make sure your model is made of triangles only, not quads/poly. I personnaly tend to prefer FBX rather than DAE. Try .OBJ as well, it is a very old file format, should be legacy. Multiple texture channels sometimes lead to non-working meshes, that's an issue you might want to look into as well.

Hope this helps.

Re: #d models crash Kineme 3D

Every object in metaCubeAtom.dae has the same name for some reason -- which takes Kineme3D by surprise so it crashes. I'll post a new version of Kineme3D later today so you can load the model.

Re: #d models crash Kineme 3D

thanks, franz, appreciate it. i'll work with triangle meshes. i have been working with polygons, true.

jstrecker, thanks a million! when i load the model with the mesh importer and use structure index member, it outputs four members, all with unique ids.
