Re: Freeboard Patch - Beta

Very nice! Thanks!

There doesn't seem to currently be a comments option associated with the Freeboard patch download page so I'll post here for now. I found this topic by running a search for Freeboard.

I'm seeking advice on how I might utilize Freeboard in a composition which is functioning as an image filter in a third party QC capable application. In that circumstance there is no selectable composition viewer dedicated just to Freeboard and without being able to select the Freeboard composition viewer, the patch doesn't appear to have a way to accept input. Would it be reasonable to suggest perhaps an option for some sort of publishable string type input port? Or maybe someone might be able to suggest a workaround?

Secondly, is it possible to somehow remove an entire phrase of text all in one fell swoop? I was thinking: type a short paragraph .. dump it quick .. type another .. dump, type, dump, type .. etc. Can this be done? I couldn't figure out how to clear phrases of text other than to backspace and delete the letters one at a time. Any ideas?

Lastly .. this particular topic and subject matter doesn't seem to be appearing in the RSS feed? I only just now learned about Freeboard from a reference to the new patch posted in an unrelated discussion. (yeah, I know .. get yourself a browser dude, and visit the homepage once in a while. ahaha)

Thanks again for the cool text patch!

Are you suggesting a string input on the freetype patch? If so, please elaborate. If you're suggesting it for the composition, that could work, but I'm not sure how Image Filters will handle it. As for Freeboard working inside such an environment, that's pretty much a no-go -- freeboard simply works the same way the standard keyboard patch does; that is, it relies on NSEvents getting delivered to the composition, which doesn't happen in Image Filters (since there is no view in those cases).

If you're deleting a known string, you can use javascript to replace it with "" (empty string). Otherwise, you can specify a start and end point (in characters), and have a javascript patch remove those portions of the string -- that'll approximate select-and-delete type stuff from text editing.

Not sure why it didn't show up -- there's probably a reason, but I don't know it. Perhaps it's something to do with the forum setup? no idea, really :(

You really should try to hit the homepage some of the time -- I don't think there have been any noteworthy releases that aren't featured there, so it's an easy catch all (until RSS stuff becomes reliable, which is feeling like never....)

Well, the context is indeed Image Filter, unfortunately. My query about possible string input on the patch was merely an attempt to describe some sort of input port that would allow the use of Freeboard in the viewer-less image filter environment. Sounds like it simply isn't possible, however.

Thank you. I'm saving this advice in anticipation of acquiring some javascript proficiency in the near future. Much appreciated.

It'll be a pleasure. Thanks.

In closing, I'd like to comment that Freeboard looks just swell in combination with several other text effects that I use (as long as they are together in a stand-alone composition). I'm curious .. do the VDMX users have a Freeboard style solution to letter by letter text entry that they can layer along with other effects? If not, it seems like those folks might perhaps be desiring that capability too?

Re: Freeboard Patch - Beta

Had a link here to a clip using Freeboard but I pulled the video. I'm going to make a nicer one.

Re: Freeboard Patch - Beta

I've loved using Freeboard for dozens of pieces -- in fact, it is the cornerstone of a whole series I'm working on.

I'm currently working on Quartz Composer 10.5 -- does Freeboard work on 10.6? If so, are there any gotchas -- if not, is it replaced by 10.6 core functionality, or are there plans to update it?

Re: Freeboard Patch - Beta

it should work on 10.6 without any problems (though I haven't tested it personally to ensure that). it is not replaced by core functionality in 10.6, nor are there immediate plans to update it (eventually it'll get bundled into a larger plugin, but for now it stands on its own)

Kineme TextEdit Tools :-P

Re: Freeboard Patch - Beta

We were actually thinking "Kineme DataEntryTools", but TextEdit sounds like a reasonable precursor :)

But more seriously, something along the lines of Input/Output (multitouch, freeboard, maybe changes/extensions to mouse, maybe changes/extensions to HID Input, maybe Wiimote?, tilt sensor, etc.)
