Kinect performance performance

boya's picture

Got the Kinect with the intention to track actors from 6-7 meters above in a performance. Preliminary results seems a bit disappointing regards to dept range and artifacts. I do not know if my living room is more messy than others, but it is freaking out on lamps, windows and sharp contrasts giving 0 depth all over the place. Also the fidelity at 5-7 meters depth accounts for only about 5% of the total z depth, so some serious clamping is due. Seem to me the Kinects cameras should have been a bit more separated to get better readings at these ranges. But could someone point me at how to clamp the z to get rid of the unwanted ranges, and also how to connect "stuff".

kinect augmented reality

dust's picture

so i planned on just drawing something on the screen with my kinect turns out this augmentation was way more interesting than any ir tag method i have tried before.

there is this very specific distance from the kinect where the tracking is just phenomenal. i'm dubbing it the sweet spot.

so the accuracy here is a bit offset as i'm using my i-sight for augmentation.... it is slightly below the kinect so the perspectives are not completely lined up but for this initial unintended experiment it works. going to tighten it up a bit.

actually works better than any ir tag methods i have tried in the past.

Release: KinectTools, v0.2

Release Type: Production
Version: 0.2
Release Notes

Changes since KinectTools 0.1

  • Works in 32bit and 64bit mode.
  • Fixed crash when stopping and restarting composition.
  • Fixed depth image orientation.
  • Applied gamma curve and alpha channel to depth image. (For a given pixel, alpha transparent == Kinect couldn't determine depth.)
  • Added sample composition.

Known Issues

  • Color fringes on RGB image.
  • The USB driver is still dropping a lot of frames (so the effective framerate is about half what it could be).
  • Doesn't handle multiple Kinects simultaneously.

Release: KinectTools, v0.1

Release Type: Beta
Version: 0.1
Release Notes

Initial release, based on libfreenect.

Known Issues

  • Only works in 64bit mode.
  • Not thoroughly tested.

Kinect on OSX !

Hi there, Here is a begining for all those who dream about integrate the new Microsoft Kinect camera in Quartz Composer project: http://www.maclife.com/article/news/xbox_kinect_modded_work_mac_os_x?utm...

Please, please... Developpers, jump into that project ! Then our comps could have:

  • Z-depth real time video, mapping, detection, etc...
  • A "Z Threshold" to increase OpenCV detection...
  • A good HD Webcam + a basic stéréo Microphone...

After the WiiMote Patch, the Kinect Patch should mobilise us !
