MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note crashing QC)

Gutterkisser's picture

Hi all,

I am currently trying to set up Quartz Composer to translate HID Input controls (a USB Guitar Hero X-Plorer controller) into MIDI Output, to send notes to Logic Pro.

I have downloaded the latest version of the Kineme MIDI Tools, and QC4 is letting me insert the required patch - 'MIDI Global Out Note'.

When this Patch is inserted, however, as soon as I do anything like open Logic Pro, or enable the IAC Driver in OSX Audio MIDI Setup (for virtually routing the MIDI signal), Quartz Composer instantly crashes.

Is there any documentation on whether or not the MIDI Global Out Note patch is currently working in Snow Leopard and QC4?

Due to the relative consistency of what causes Quartz Composer to crash when using this patch, it seems like the MIDI signal is at least responding to its destination (i.e Logic Pro).

It's worth noting that I have used the built-in 'MIDI Controllers Sender' patch to successfully mapped the guitar's tilt sensor and whammy bar to the Modulation Wheel and Pitchbend CC controls respectively.

If anyone has any thoughts on the above waffling, I would be ever so appreciative! Thank you in advance.

im having troubles queueing this vertex structure in parallel does anyone know how to get the "queue structure in parallel" working ?

so far this patch takes the bass frequencies and creates my mesh verts for me. its pretty cool as it is with just the bass, now imagine mids and hi eq etc... my problem is i don't think i will be able to pull off two more meshes unless i queue in parallel. do you think this is parallel solution. i would like to get 3 specturm bands all writing in 3d space at the same time.

any help would be great this takes audio input to work...

This video is a run down of some tips about some new examples files available at the Apple Developer Center website.

Then, I take a text extrusion example, and show how to reconfigure it to use the OpenCL kernel setup to process video in a way that is similar to the Rutt Etra, or Kineme3D Heightfield, but which seems to work especially well with shadows (notwithstanding any other shadow limitations).

I also talk about and show the Apple 2d fluid example, "2D Smoke", and the composition "Pages Jiggle" in action.

This is a simple test app. The basic idea is this:

-Make 4 points on the viewer by clicking with a trackpad (haven't tested with mouse), in a clockwise or counterclockwise manner.

-"Grab" the area in between the 4 points (this is where the new SL interaction patch is implemented).

-Move it out of the way to reveal a backing scene.

-Put two fingers to trackpad and click to clear points and reset.

The one caveat in operation of this is that the next time you select four points after your initial run, the x/y offset of the Interaction patch "window cutout" will be the same as the last run. This being the case, the idea is to return the "piece" back to cutout window before clearing points.

The cutout area will track to motion, more or less.

This is a 10.6 app, and will not work in Leopard, 10.5.

After a great deal of testing of the shadow patch, I wanted to make a basic composition with it that showed it in a nice light, using only built in shapes. I realized that the Replicate In Space will work with the shadow engine in a way that that Iterated objects do not, though I found some aberrations in setting this up using a cube surrounding, particular face culling settings, and certain 3D transform settings that I'm still fleshing out. The cube surrounding did not make the cut because of this!

I was trying to be a bit minimal and stark with this, and also tweak the shadow engine in a way that wouldn't look too heavy handed.

This is needs 10.6, and needs no plug-ins; it's a bit of a "stock patch" study.
