Ok, while poking around ParticleTools 0.3 (release should be tonight, if all goes well -- bug smokris ;), we (re)discovered an annoying feature of applications: When they crash, you usually lose unsaved documents. (we lost a lot of work due to this today ;)

Some apps work around this, of course, but QC isn't really one of them. It's got an autosave feature, which is nice for periodic saving, but it isn't really well documented, and doesn't seem to kick in right at crash time.

So I poked around in KinemeCore some, and managed to get this:

It basically snapshots each composition as-is, and saves them to the desktop so you can recover them in their crash-time state (note that some compositions can crash QC just by getting loaded, so it's difficult to work with these).

Thoughts on this potential new feature? Lame? Useful? Redundant?

insta-crash when forces/particles removed with collision

I am using Particle Tools v0.2 on Mac OS 10.5.5, QC v.3.0.

I have a little system where an emitter is emitting more emitters which emit particles. I checked the particle count and that's not what's causing the crash, btw. There are a few forces, a couple of winds, or a wind and a vortex.

I also have a collider with a face structure that I ganked wholesale from smokris' "hose" composition.

Then, if I remove a force and/or the particle while the viewer is running, it crashes. Usually if I delete the patch outright it crashes right away, whereas if I disconnect it, it crashes the next time I hit stop on the viewer.

So, summary. Three observed conditions:

  1. # of objects in scene ≥4
  2. ≥2 forces
  3. Collider with smokris' faces structure

Several possible actions:

  1. Delete particle while viewer is running
  2. Remove ≥1 object (sometimes it survives one but crashes on the second time) while viewer is running, then stop viewer.

ALL of the conditions + EITHER of the actions = INSTANT crash.

The End.

...thanks so much for making this a proper project, i'd emailed before about a patch or two, open source, etc but didn't hear back. so great to see this happen, hope to contribute to the project, comments now but code down the line if all goes to plan.

and thrilled to see my holy grail of the shell script node, which was going to be first custom node when i finished the hillegass tome =]
