Sorting a file structure

sorenknud's picture

Hi there, i use the Kineme Directory Scanner (Blocking) to get a list of files.

First: What are they sorted by by default? It does not seem to be - alphabetical?

Second: I cannot figure out how to make a "Sorting Descriptor" in the "Structure Sort" patch...

I simply want to list my files like this:

01_file-blka 02_file-blabla 03_file-tika

But they come in "random" order.

Any clues?

Thanks a lot!

best, soren

Re: Sorting a file structure

First, they're sorted by "filesystem order" -- i.e. whatever order the FS provides them.

Second: I don't know how to use this off the top of my head -- I'm sure someone knows and can fill in some details though.

Sorry, i did not mean random - just that i could'nt figure out what they where sorted by.

Would be great if someone knew what to type in the sorting descriptor- the documentation is really not worth yelling horray for :-)

Re: Sorting a file structure

You type the Key Name into the sort description.

So from the structured output of Kineme Directory Scanner Blocking patch your choices of key are "name", "path" and "url". Do not type the quotes in the sort description input, just the key name.

Hover the cursor over any output producing a dictionary structure and you will see a yellow bkgd 'tooltip' preview of the structure which lists all key names for the first few objects in quotes.

Re: Sorting a file structure

This is interesting; I get (and have always gotten, as far as I am aware), an alphabetical result with either the Kineme Directory Scanner Blocking, or the regular Directory Scanner.

I had just tested this for the last few minutes and can't get it to give a non-alphabetical result.

Re: Sorting a file structure

Try pointing it at a folder in your iTunes directory. I get the results sorted by the alphanumeric on the parent folder (following the folder level hierarchy) not the track names. Sorting the results by name sorts by the file name, irrespective of the parent folder names.

Also with no key name in the sort patch I get a different ordering, but still not alphanumeric order of track must be sorting to something I just can't see what.
