Try finding the QC app and doing "get info" on it, then check "32 bit" so it uses the older QuickTime. I'm not saying that will work, but it may be worth trying.

OS X does not show AVI by default, even in Lion (or SL, Leopard, etc.). You probably had Perian installed :)
