MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note crashing QC)

Gutterkisser's picture

Hi all,

I am currently trying to set up Quartz Composer to translate HID Input controls (a USB Guitar Hero X-Plorer controller) into MIDI Output, to send notes to Logic Pro.

I have downloaded the latest version of the Kineme MIDI Tools, and QC4 is letting me insert the required patch - 'MIDI Global Out Note'.

When this Patch is inserted, however, as soon as I do anything like open Logic Pro, or enable the IAC Driver in OSX Audio MIDI Setup (for virtually routing the MIDI signal), Quartz Composer instantly crashes.

Is there any documentation on whether or not the MIDI Global Out Note patch is currently working in Snow Leopard and QC4?

Due to the relative consistency of what causes Quartz Composer to crash when using this patch, it seems like the MIDI signal is at least responding to its destination (i.e Logic Pro).

It's worth noting that I have used the built-in 'MIDI Controllers Sender' patch to successfully mapped the guitar's tilt sensor and whammy bar to the Modulation Wheel and Pitchbend CC controls respectively.

If anyone has any thoughts on the above waffling, I would be ever so appreciative! Thank you in advance.

there's no documentation, but there have been a number of crash reports for MIDI tools on Snow Leopard with this patch, so I'm putting it in the "not working" category for the time being.

Thanks for the prompt response, much appreciated.

Is this currently the only means of outputting MIDI notes from QC, or are there any other workarounds or solutions?

I know there's other software options such as Max/MSP, but I don't have access to that (not to mention any knowledge on it) and would much prefer using QC as the sole intermediary.

My current workaround is to use Gamepad Companion to output the Guitar controls as keyboard keys, in conjunction with the Caps Lock keyboard in Logic Pro. This allows me to play notes via Gamepad, while QC sends the Mod Wheel and Pitchbend data - but this is quite clumsy and is prone to frustrating latency.

Is there any kind of time frame for MIDI Tools being updated for Snow Leopard compatibility? I don't ask out of impatience (I can see how much work goes into building these tools) - just pure curiosity.

To transform HID inputs (all USB controller) into Midi (notes and controllers) there is a good software named "Junxion". I hope it could help you.

I've had a go with the Junxion trial and it seems like it could work well. I guess I'm just keen to stick to Quartz because I've started teaching myself the program recently anyway... and this would be one of those good 'victories' to succeed with.

I'd also prefer not to shell out for an app that I will really only use for one purpose. I don't recall the Junxion licence being too pricey but when Quartz is free (and so amazing!) I'd really love to tick this box with it - all the components are there.

Btw- off topic - but does anyone know how to reverse the output value of a given range in Quartz?

Say the range is between 0 and 1.

I want 0 to come out as 1, and vice versa.

So 0.2 would be 0.8

0.3 would be 0.7

Etc - is there a way of doing this? It's to reverse the output on the guitar's whammy bar and vertical tilt sensor.

Math Expression patch -- use the expression "1-x"

Re: MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note ...

there is also a program called osculator it is a bit cheaper than the above mentioned software that does the same sorts of things. also PD is free its like max msp you could make a udp 2 midi converter pretty fast with that program.

By the way, can you supply a crash log for when this happens? I don't have any MIDI stuff to test on my SL machine, so I may not be able to reproduce it for a while (smokris, on the other hand, may be able to do so sooner).

Re: MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note ...

Alright, I'll start doing that - I imagine the automated one that appears upon crashing is what you mean?

And cheers for the Math Expression tip, works a charm (and makes perfect sense).

Yes, that's the one (or, in file form at ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Quartz Composer-blah blah blah -- that's a bit easier to deal with than copy/pasting huge swaths of text.)

glad math expression worked out :)

Has there been any update on a fix for MidiTools?

Re: MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note ...

I am getting the same crash, except I am running 10.5.8. Whatever the problem is, I don't think it's exclusive to Snow Leopard/QC4. I've attached my crash log - the only patch in the composition at the time of the crash was Kineme Global Output MIDI Note.

I hope this helps!

EDIT: Also worth noting, I can't get the patch to light up any of the LEDs on my Launchpad. Patch totally broken maybe?

Re: MIDI Tools in Snow Leopard (MIDI Global Out Note ...

In case this helps anyone, I finally got the MIDI Global Out Note patch to work in Snow Leopard / QC4.

I simply tried installing earlier Beta releases of Kineme's MIDI Tools, until I found one that worked. In this case, v20080205 - http://kineme.net/MIDITools20080205beta .

It's outputting notes to Logic Pro via the IAC Driver and seems perfectly stable. With the Guitar Hero controller, I'm actually finding QC far easier to use than JunXion and the like (in terms of setting up notes, octave changes etc).

Also finally able to experiment with stuff like inertia-driven objects triggering synths, so this patch working is a big plus for me.

It used to be that you had to go to your user profile and click the "I would like to beta test new and updated patches". But I just opened up the beta releases to everyone, so you no longer need to do that. You can go to http://kineme.net/MIDITools and download the latest version now.
