Date to number formatter

Hi I am hoping someone has a simple solution for this, I would like an easily way to convert dates into numbers quartz can use to compare to the system time patch. I could sit down and work it out all the time but I was wondering if there was a widget, small program or javascript that could do this for me. It would allow me to let certain things to happen at certain times which could be very useful.
