Correctly using Line Overlay/Image Crop

I am just discovering Line Overlays within Quartz Composer. I am having difficulty cropping the image to avoid the infinities expressed int he patch description. I wanted to test the overlay on a checkerboard but I can't get it to align.

Is there a way to figure the cropping before connecting it? I am sure this is a easy bit, but I would appreciate the tip. Thanks

Maybe try Image Dimensions to match sizes, or Crop to Reference. (Matching sizes assumes you want the Line Overlay and whatever you put below it to align).

Maybe I'm completely missing the point with this composition, but what I get doesn't look like a Line Overlay as such, basically, it just knocks out everything , either as Image input or Mask Image input, unless I apply a color invert patch between the Line Overlay Image output and the recipient rendering patch.

From the patch description:

Quote:
The result has alpha and is rendered in black, so it won't look like much until you render it over another image using source over compositing.

The Inverse Image patch helped out a bunch. I also noticed that playing with the clear and sprite blending options, you could get away without the inverse image patch
