Choose Audio Input Source

Tron's picture

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out how to stream the music from my computer (iTunes, VLC, whatever...) into quartz's audio input patch. However, it seems that the only option for me is to run a cable from the audio-out of my computer to a mixer and then back to the audio-in, if I want to be able to hear the sound as well. Has anyone come up with another way to do this? Is there an option to change the input anywhere in the setting for quartz composer? Or is there a patch that allows the selection of other sources?

Thanks, Tron

you should be able to do that by way of using the standard audio input patch and connecting the volume levels output into whatever math , or input port of whatever renderer you want. that simple :-)

Be glad Tron, for there are many options on this front, some less techy than others.

See also Kineme Audio Tools.

See also the attached example requires Kineme Audio Tools & a file called Peon.mp3, but you can replace that filename with one of your own, it's loaded at root level.

See Quartz Composer Guide site - especially the Quartz Builder section that includes how to build a QC based application that requires the presence of a Audio File Input construction.

Look to install SoundFlower Bed - it will extend your options.

Check you haven't fouled up your Audio / MIDI setup.

Don't expect MIDI out from GarageBand :-)

Try making a new composition from Template - Music Visualizer and start the iTunes visualizer and marvel at how easy it is [can be]

Other options are available.

Re: Choose Audio Input Source

Hey Tron

Welcome to Kineme!

I've done what you are wanting, where I can get the sound structure in quartz composer and have the sound playing on my computer.

As cybero said, you will want soundflower and soundflower bed. Then use Kineme's audio patch set up as shown in the image.

To get the audio playing out of the computer start soundflower bed, go to the menu item near the clock on the top right of your screen and select what I have selected in the other image.

I must warn you though, when I have soundflower running my computer likes to freeze and I have to do a hard restart. Though I don't know if this is soundflower and I suspicious towards it.

If you have any troubles let me know.

Cheers

Lango

Re: Choose Audio Input Source

I made a nice little macro to allow selection of the audio-source and channel with sliders, with a nice display to show the info.

I'll try and dig it out when I get home.
